Winter Vaccination – Community voices – Cyclists

Hear from older Australians as they share their experiences with vaccine protection against respiratory viruses like Influenza (flu), COVID‑19 and RSV. Getting vaccinated against these viruses can help protect and reduce your risk of serious illness and hospitalisation.

So today we're out for a bike ride. Beautiful, sunny day. We've stopped for coffees. Life is great.

It's important to stay fit and healthy because we've still got lots of good years ahead of us and want to maximise the time that we're around. And vaccinations are important because it keeps us healthy and the health outcomes as you get older, worsen. And so having a shot reduces the impact of those diseases. And if you do happen to still contract the disease, the impact will be less because your body's better prepared to fight against it.

It's definitely worth getting those shots. I've had friends who have caught influenza in the past, and I've seen what it does to them and how it knocks them back. Sometimes they can be laid low for weeks and that's not what I want to do.

My advice to people who think that vaccinations are not important would be have a think about your long-term health and really consider what is best for you and for the people that you love. I think it's important and fully encourage everyone to get on board. You know it really does improve your quality of life.
