People with intellectual disability can get a health assessment once a year that is supported by Medicare. The annual health assessment helps identify unmet health needs and preventable conditions.

Health professionals need the right knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for people with intellectual disability. The Curriculum Development Project will support universities and accreditation authorities to improve pre-registration education for health professionals to better meet this need.

The review of complexity in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) was an independent review led by Sue Dawson. It examined the NRAS for complex or unnecessary processes with the aim to improve regulatory outcomes and keep Australians safe by providing high-quality health care.

We are working with state and territory governments to develop a National Allied Health Workforce Strategy. The strategy will address issues such as the shortage of allied health professionals in Australia.

Establishing the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health (national centre) is an important step in improving the health of people with intellectual disability.
The centre will bring together experts, resources and research on intellectual disability healthcare.
