Your screening choices – National Cervical Screening Program – Video

A video for First Nations women about the choices available when doing a Cervical Screening Test.

01:38

Did you know

you can

choose how you do

your cervical screening?

There isn't just one way.

You can have the test done

by a doctor, nurse

or health worker.

If you have no symptoms

like unusual bleeding,

you can collect the

sample yourself.

If a doctor, nurse

or health worker does it,

they'll gently

take some cells

from your cervix

using a small, soft brush.

It might feel

a little uncomfortable

or unfamiliar,

but it shouldn't

be painful.

You can ask them to stop

at any time.

If you choose

self collection,

you will use

a small, thin swab

to collect the sample

yourself

in a private space

at the clinic.

The swab doesn't need

to reach your cervix.

There's a mark to guide you.

It only takes a minute.

Both options test for HPV,

both are safe and reliable

and both are respected.

There's no better

or worse option.

The best option

is the one

that feels right for you.

Whatever you choose,

you can ask questions

and you can change

your mind.

You're in control

the whole time.

When it's time to screen,

you can have a yarn

with your local

health worker

and choose

the way that works for you.

It's screening done

your way.
