The introduction of Medicare on 1 February 1984 was one of the most transformative moments in Australian history. It meant access to health care became a right that all Australians could share, regardless of their income or background.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Medicare. It is more important than ever to celebrate this great project, which is why the Australian Government has launched the Stronger Medicare Awards.
These awards recognise the role of primary care in providing accessible and high-quality health care to all Australians. They also honour those who have championed Medicare and contributed to its success over the last 4 decades.
We have received nominations from all corners of the country, for people who have gone above and beyond to improve the lives of all Australians. From local GPs to multi-disciplinary teams and healthcare practices, the range and depth of Australia’s healthcare system has been on display.
We will celebrate our Medicare Champions at an awards ceremony in the nation’s capital in November and announce our finalists in the coming weeks.
