The PBS, or Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, is a government program that makes some prescription medicines more affordable.
Under the PBS, the government pays part of the cost of many prescription medicines, making them cheaper for you to use.
To access the PBS, you need a Medicare card, a valid prescription from your doctor or health worker, and the medicine you need must be on the list of medicines covered by the PBS.
The PBS helps everyone get the medicine they need t stay healthy, without having to worry too much about the cost.
If you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you may also qualify for the Closing the Gap PBS Co-payment Program.
If you are eligible for the Closing the Gap PBS Co-payment Program, most medicines listed on the PBS will only cost you a few dollars. And if you already have a concession card, some of your medicines will be free.
There is also something called the PBS Safety Net if you spend a large amount on medicines throughout the year. Once you spend up to a certain amount on PBS medicines, the Safety Net kicks in and you can receive most of your medicines at a reduced cost for free for the rest of the year.
If you have any questions, have a yarn with your doctor or health worker or visit health.gov.au/pbs and start saving on your medicines today.
