Dr Nick on COVIDSafe
Read transcript

Good afternoon, it’s Dr Nick Coatsworth and I’m here to tell you about the new COVIDSafe app, which will help protect you, your family, your friends as well as our doctors and nurses and our community from COVID-19.

It will help you be notified quickly if you have been in contact with someone with coronavirus.

How does the COVIDSafe app work?

It uses Bluetooth technology to look for other phones that also have the app installed. When you come in contact with someone who has the app installed it records a digital handshake between your phones, the only handshake we can do at the moment, noting the time, the distance and the duration of contact.

Importantly the COVIDSafe app does not collect your location.

All information collected by the app is encrypted and stored in the app on your phone, no one, not even you can access it.

The information stays on your mobile for 21 days, this takes into account the coronavirus incubation period and the time it takes to get tested.

If you’ve been diagnosed with COVID-19 you’ll be asked by a public health official to consent to the data in your phone being uploaded so that people you’ve been in contact with can be notified quickly.

Likewise if you’ve been a contact of somebody the app allows you to be notified quickly.

Meaning you, your family and friends can get the advice and help you need as quick as possible.

So what are the steps to download the app?

First thing is that you go to the App Store or Google Play and search for the COVIDSafe and download it.

After downloading you will need to enter your name, phone number, postcode and age range.

Make sure you read the privacy information it’s really important.

A one time only PIN will then be sent to your phone via text.

You put this PIN into your phone, the app will then tell you what settings you need to have switched on for it to function effectively.

You don’t need to do anything else.

The app will then run in the background on your phone and keep you COVIDSafe.

The more people who download the app the quicker we can make sure that people are protected from coronavirus and our lives can become more normal.
