This report summarises the research methods used to gather information about community attitudes and behaviour about illicit drugs. It provides an overview of:

  • young people’s issues
  • parents’ perspectives
  • attitudes towards information, support and treatment
  • effective ways to communicate about drugs

The researchers recommend 3 potential communication strategies:

  • highlighting the dangers of drugs to young people
  • reinforcing the risks of drug taking among young people
  • encouraging heavy drug users to seek help
