Choose a pathway for the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program

You can take either the general or the rural pathway to complete your training. Find out more about pathways to becoming a GP through the AGPT Program.

General pathway

The general pathway lets you train to become a GP in any region of Australia, including in a city.  

If you trained overseas, there might be restrictions on where you can train.

To choose the general pathway, apply to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

Rural pathway

If you take the rural pathway, you must spend at least 12 months training in a rural or remote location. You could train to become a GP anywhere except for a major city — from a regional town or coastal area to the remote outback.

If you are applying for the rural pathway, we expect you will live in the community while you train.

Some overseas-trained doctors are subject to Section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973. If this applies to you, you must train on the rural pathway unless you have an exemption from us.
