Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program reforms

From 1 February 2023, responsibility for the AGPT Program transferred to the GP colleges, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), through their college-led training models.

College-led training commences

GP training now aligns with other specialist medical colleges. The RACGP and the ACRRM are delivering AGPT Program training through their college-led training models.

The RACGP and the ACRRM select, educate, train, assess and support registrars through to fellowship.

National Consistent Payments (NCP)

National Consistent Payments will start from semester one in 2023.

National Consistent Payments (NCP) restructure the payments previously provided by regional training organisations. The NCP framework outlines which payments will be made to registrars, supervisors and practices involved in GP training.

In addition to the framework, the GP colleges (RACGP and ACRRM) can provide flexible payments. The colleges will manage and administer flexible payments to registrars, supervisors, and practices.

National Consistent Payments Framework

From Semester one 2023, the National Consistent Payments (NCP) framework will provide support payments to supervisors, practices and registrars on the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program.

GP workforce planning and prioritisation

Organisations involved in GP workforce planning will provide analysis and advice to GP training colleges. This advice will inform where AGPT registrars are distributed. These requirements will help address workforce needs – now and for the future.
