Funding for the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program

The Australian Government funds the AGPT Program. General practice colleges assess applications and award fellowships. Regional Training Organisations (RTOs) deliver the training. Find out about how we fund and manage the program.

How the AGPT Program is funded

Australian Government funding for the AGPT Program covers the cost of your training.

You will have to pay your own:

  • application fees
  • assessment fees
  • college membership costs.

Who manages the training

The Australian College of Remote and Rural Medicine (ACRRM) and Royal Australian College of General Practice (RACGP) manage the training.

The GP college you apply through will assess your application. The Department of Health does not assess applications.

Your college will also award your fellowship if you successfully complete your training.

Regional Training Organisations (RTO) deliver the training. They:

  • conduct your entry interviews
  • deliver your training  in line with college requirements
  • organise your placements in their accredited facilities
  • offer support and advice on training programs and requirements
  • work with you to plan your learning
  • help you identify, review and meet your goals.

We have policies to support every part of the AGPT Program. You must follow these policies throughout your training.

We know that circumstances can change. Our policies tell you when we can be flexible so you can finish your training.

Grant opportunity

As part of the transition to college-led general practice training, we continue to make it a priority that the AGPT Program training placements meet future GP workforce needs. Grant funding will be available to advise us on AGPT Program distribution targets.

Regional Training Organisations (RTOs) currently perform AGPT program workforce planning and distribution activities. The activities in the upcoming grant will build on the work currently performed by RTOs. We will select organisations to perform the grant activities through an open competitive process.

The AGPT Program General Practice Workforce Planning and Prioritisation grant will help us set AGPT Program distribution targets to meet current and future community needs.

The information created through this work will be critical to AGPT Program training placement decisions.

The work will include analysis of:

  • current and future community needs
  • training capacity
  • training pathways.
