Webinar reminder: Greater transparency about aged care providers and services – new reporting requirements

Registrations are still open for our webinar for aged care providers on Friday 30 June at 2pm‑3.30pm AEST to discuss new reporting requirements as part of the measures to improve transparency of aged care providers and services.

This webinar will:

  • provide an overview of the process for submitting information about provider operations, due by 31 October (further information is available on the Strengthening provider governance in aged care webpage)
  • explore how data is captured through the GPMS Provider Operations Collection Form, Quarterly Financial Report and other mechanisms to improve transparency and provide insights into sector performance
  • provide an update on our strategic direction, our priorities and plan to work with you to prepare for the changes ahead.

Webinar: Writing illness – A narrative approach to the psychological challenges of illness

Join Swinburne’s Wellbeing Clinic for Older Adults for their upcoming free webinar on ageing on Friday 7 July at 4.45‑6pm AEST.

This webinar is for people employed in aged care, as well as psychologists, social workers, counsellors and volunteers who work with older adults.

Emeritus Professor of English Richard Freadman outlines the role stories play in shaping our experience of illness. Professor Freadman will discuss how writing about illness, and exploring one’s experience of illness with others, can be therapeutic.

Reforming in-home aged care webinar recording and FAQs now available

We had 4,100 people attend the fourth Reforming in-home aged care update webinar held on 18 May.

A list of Frequently Asked Questions is now available.

If you were unable to attend, the presentation slides and a recording of the webinar are also available.

The webinar provided an update on in-home aged care reform, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, Home Care Packages Program, the new Aged Care Act and new regulatory model.

Updated resources on the 24/7 registered nurse responsibility

From 1 July, every residential aged care home must have a registered nurse (RN) on-site and on duty at all times.

To help prepare providers, the department has updated the Care minutes and 24/7 registered nurse responsibility guide. This includes a new Section 1.4 with definitions of on-site and on duty, case studies in Appendix 4, and updates to Section 5 on the 24/7 RN supplement and Section 6 on 24/7 RN reporting.

Providers need to log on to the Government Provider Management System (GPMS) to report on the 24/7 RN responsibility. The first 24/7 RN report is due by 11:59pm AEST on Monday 7 August through GPMS. Eligible providers that do not report for a facility will not receive the facility’s 24/7 RN supplement for that month.

Free food and nutrition training modules for aged care homes

In May 2023, the Maggie Beer Foundation was awarded a $5 million grant to deliver an education and training program for aged care chefs and cooks over the next three years.

The Maggie Beer Foundation previously developed 11 online training modules for cooks, chefs and others focused on improving the food experience for older people in residential aged care. These are now free to access via the Maggie Beer Foundation website.

The modules were developed in collaboration with dietitians and other experts and cover:

  • cooking techniques
  • texture-modified food and presentation
  • food culture
  • improving dining experiences
  • maximising flavour.

As part of the new grant, the Maggie Beer Foundation will be releasing an additional 6 new modules later this year, also free to access.
