In light of the rapidly evolving coronavirus situation, the Victorian Government has developed a weekly survey for clinical facilities including Health Services and Aged Care facilities to understand current volumes of clinical waste stored on site and waste management constraints.

We would highly encourage you to take the time to complete this survey as it provides valuable information to assist in the ongoing response to the pandemic.

Guidelines for disposal of COVID-19-related waste – Aged care

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has amended its guidance regarding the disposal of COVID-19 related PPE waste at aged care facilities. This advice relates to waste arising from the treatment of coronavirus (COVID-19) patients and does not apply to waste related to other communicable diseases or otherwise classified as clinical waste.

Please follow the latest advice on disposal of COVID-19 related waste at aged care facilities and other health care settings (excluding hospitals).

Waste type Disposal
Unsoiled PPE Place in general wast and secure, recommend dobule bagging to prevent spills
Soiled* PPE Follow normal clinical wast disposal procedures and place in clinical waste bins
RATs Follow normal clinical wast disposal procedures and place in clinical waste bins
  • *Soiled with blood or bodily fluids
