Tasmanians have saved more than $74 million on 12.9 million cheaper prescriptions since July 2022, thanks to the Albanese Government.

The Albanese Government has continued to ease pressure for Tasmanians at the pharmacy counter, including:

  • Labor’s first cut to the cost of medicines (2022) and indexation freeze (2025), which saved Tasmanians $9.8 million in 2025
  • Labor slashing the cost of medicines again (January 2026) to a maximum $25 a script, already saving Tasmanians $3.9 million this year.
  • Labor’s 60-day prescriptions policy, which has already saved Tasmanians $8.1 million since September 2023
  • Labor’s decision to lower thresholds for the PBS safety net, which has saved Tasmanians $23.9 million since it was introduced in July 2022

The Albanese Labor Government firmly believes that Australians shouldn’t have to worry about whether they can afford to access the healthcare they need.

With cheaper medicines, Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, more bulk billing and a record investment in women’s health, Labor is committed to delivering cost of living relief to Australians.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister White:

“Medicines aren’t optional. If you need them to manage your health, you shouldn’t have to think twice about whether you can afford them.

“That’s why the Albanese Labor Government has made medicines cheaper, expanded 60-day prescriptions and frozen the price for pensioners and concession care holders.

“These changes are making a real difference for Tasmanians with fewer difficult choices at the pharmacy counter. Less stress about whether a prescription can wait. And a little more breathing room for families already juggling cost of living.”
