New members on National Health and Medical Research Council

The Australian Government has appointed the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Council for 2024 to 2027.

The Australian Government has appointed the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Council for 2024 to 2027.
 
New members appointed to the council include:

  • Associate Professor Stephen Adelstein
  • Professor Jonathan Carapetis AM 
  • Professor Raymond (Ray) Chan
  • Professor Susan Hillier
  • Adjunct Professor Darryl O’Donnell
  • Professor Steve Robson
  • Professor Yvette Roe. 

The following council members have been reappointed:

  • Professor Emily Banks AM
  • Ms Ainslie Cahill AM
  • Professor Jane Gunn AO
  • Professor Elizabeth Hartland AM
  • Professor Richard Murray
  • Professor Anushka Patel
  • Ms Bronwyn Le Grice

Professor Caroline Homer AO, a researcher and expert in maternal and newborn health, will continue to lead the council. A full list of the new council membership is available here.
 
The NHMRC funds high-quality health and medical research. It aims to build research capability, support researchers and encourage the translation of research into better health outcomes. It also promotes high ethical standards for health and medical research.
 
Members of the NHMRC Council bring expertise in public health and medical research. They represent a broad range of perspectives, including First Nations people, healthcare providers, business and consumers.
 
The new council members join at a time of significant change in the health and medical research sector. This includes government plans to create a National Health and Medical Research Strategy, which the council will help shape.
 
The NHMRC Council will have joint meetings with the Australian Medical Research Advisory Board (AMRAB) to support alignment with the Medical Research Future Fund.
