PDF version: Advisory Statement A18/01 - Updated Explanatory Notes in the Medicare Benefits Schedule and referencing in the DIAS User Guide (PDF 245 KB)
To provide advice about changes to the referencing system used to refer to individual Explanatory Notes in the online version of the Medicare Benefits Schedule
(MBS), published at www.mbsonline.gov.au and the impact on the DIAS User Guide.
The Department of Health has moved to a new platform to produce the online version of the MBS. Following the launch of this platform, the referencing system used to refer to particular Explanatory Notes and to identify these notes has changed.
As an example, the former Note DID (Requests for Diagnostic Imaging Services), in Category 5: Diagnostic Imaging Services of the MBS is now referenced as Note IN.0.1.
This change has resulted in a discrepancy in the DIAS User Guide for Standard 2.1, Provision of Service Standard
, as the User Guide uses the former referencing system to refer practices to a particular Explanatory Note.
In part, Standard 2.1 requires that where a practitioner has self-determined a diagnostic imaging service, they must do so in accordance with requirements of the Health Insurance Act 1973
The explanatory material for Standard 2.1 in the DIAS User Guide refers practices to Explanatory Note DIF, ‘Details Required on Accounts, Receipts and Medicare Assignment of Benefit Forms’, for further information about when a service is self-determined.
Practices should note that the former Explanatory Note DIF is now titled Note IN.0.7 in the current online version of the MBS, and should refer to this note in relation to Standard 2.1.
For more information
Practices should refer to the DIAS User Guide for Practices Applying for Accreditation for clarifying information
about the evidentiary requirements for Standard 2.1, and contact their accreditor for further information and advice.
