Using the SHRIMP-SI ion probe to detect autologous blood doping using stable isotopic analysis

This study will try to analyse the stable isotopic composition of oxygen and carbon in single blood cells using the new SHRIMP-SI ion probe at the Australian National University. If this can be done with an analytical precision that exceeds the natural variability in international athletes, then it paves the way for identifying individual blood cells that have been transfused in a blood doping procedure. For this current funding application, the emphasis will be on adapting analytical techniques designed for crystalline solids to the analysis of biological materials accurately enough to be useful in identifying foreign populations of cells.
