  • This initiative provides $633 million over 10 years from 2019–20 and supports high-quality research that improves patient care, translates new discoveries into practice, and encourages consumers and researchers to work together on emerging priorities.

  • The Australian Brain Cancer Mission is a $124 million fund that supports research into brain cancer treatments. It aims to double the survival rate of Australians living with brain cancer over the next 10 years.

  • This initiative provides funding for research infrastructure that will be used to conduct world-class health and medical research. It includes funding for facilities in rural and remote areas so that people can participate in clinical trials without the need to travel to a major city.

  • The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) is a $20 billion long-term investment supporting Australian health and medical research. The MRFF aims to transform health and medical research and innovation to improve lives, build the economy and contribute to health system sustainability.

  • The Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program trains medical registrars in general practice. Registrars who achieve their fellowship under the program can work as GPs anywhere in Australia. Find out about the program, who is eligible and how to apply.

  • We are trialling reablement care approaches among CHSP providers in selected regions. The trial will give us a better idea of how these approaches help senior Australians stay independent for longer. Find out how it affects CHSP providers.

  • This program is for doctors who are temporary or permanent residents of Australia and not vocationally recognised. Doctors on this program get support and training towards joining a college Fellowship program to become vocationally recognised.

  • The SDCP funds specialist dementia care units in residential aged care homes. The units provide specialised care to people with very severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. They aim to reduce or stabilise symptoms so that people can move into less intensive care settings.

  • This ACAR opens in March 2020. We are consulting with stakeholders to help us work out what aged care needs we should target. Find out how to provide feedback and what’s on offer in the 2020 ACAR.

  • The Dementia, Ageing and Aged Care Mission is a research program that is investing $185 million from 2018–19 to 2028–29. It aims to support older Australians to maintain their health and quality of life as they age, live independently for longer, and access quality care when they need it.

  • The Medical Research Commercialisation initiative supports innovative early stage health and medical research in Australia. It helps researchers transform their ideas into life-saving medicines, devices and treatments to help tomorrow’s patients.

  • The CVS arranges volunteer visits to older people to provide friendship and companionship. Visits are available to anyone receiving government-subsidised residential aged care or Home Care Packages.

  • The Cardiovascular Health Mission will invest $220 million over 10 years to bring together researchers, health professionals, industry and patients to make transformative improvements in heart and vascular health and stroke for all Australians.

  • The Indigenous Health Research Fund (IHRF) is investing in Indigenous-led research to tackle health issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

  • This package of initiatives is helping to reduce the use of physical and chemical restraint in aged care homes. There have been changes to the legislation about using physical and chemical restraint in residential aged care, and some practical measures put in place.

  • The Primary Health Care Research initiative will increase Australia’s evidence base in primary health care through research to improve service delivery and patient outcomes, and translate this knowledge into action.

  • The Research Data Infrastructure initiative will fund the creation or extension of research data infrastructure with a focus on data registries, biobanks and data linkage platforms to support Australian medical research. It will provide $80 million over 8 years, starting in 2020–21.

  • The Stem Cell Therapies Mission is a research funding program that will invest $150 million over 9 years to develop innovative, safe and effective treatments accessible to all Australians who need them.

  • The Traumatic Brain Injury Mission will invest $50 million over 10 years to improve patient recovery after brain injury. It will support projects that predict recovery outcomes, or identify the most effective care and treatments.

  • SIRS is the Australian Government’s proposed approach to reduce the risk of abuse and better respond to serious incidents in government-subsidised residential aged care. SIRS will build the ability of providers to better manage incidents if they occur and make sure care recipients are supported.

  • The Clinical Trials Activity initiative helps Australian researchers and patients test new treatments through national and international clinical trials.

  • The Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission aims to support a million Australians with mental health issues access new approaches to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and recovery. The Medical Research Future Fund is providing $125 million over 10 years from 2018–19 for this mission.

  • The Global Health initiative will invest $28.4 million over 10 years to fund projects that improve our understanding of global health threats and how best to tackle them. The initial focus is on tackling antimicrobial resistance and drug-resistant tuberculosis.

  • This initiative supports targeted research on new ways to address risk factors for chronic and complex diseases in Australia.
