Choose a Regional Training Organisation for the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program

If you apply for the AGPT Program, you need to choose a Regional Training Organisation (RTO). There is one in every state and territory. Find out where they are and what they do.

RTO training opportunities

The department contracts 9 RTOs across 11 training regions. They deliver training in urban, regional and rural Australia.

Each RTO provides different learning opportunities based on the needs of the communities in their region.

As well as arranging hospital and practice training placements, some RTOs offer:

  • academic posts — to build skills in research, teaching, project work and critical research evaluation
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health training — to build culturally appropriate care skills
  • advanced skills training — to strengthen your chosen specialty or extended skill

You can nominate up to 4 RTO preferences when you apply.

Contact your preferred RTOs to discuss your training needs. This will help you select those that best meet your career goals.

Incentives for regional training

You can get financial incentives if you train for a minimum period in a regional, rural or remote area.

Payments:

  • are higher in more remote areas
  • rise according to the number of Medicare Benefits Schedule services you provide

Find out more about the Workforce Incentive Program.

Transferring between RTOs or training regions

Generally, we expect you to commit to a region for the length of your training. This helps you build a connection with your communities and RTO.

Rural generalists can transfer to do their skills training, if needed.

We might consider transfers in other circumstances, such as to address specific career, training or education needs.

If you need to transfer, talk to your RTO and read more in our transfer policy.
