Immunisation coverage rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children

The national coverage rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 5 year olds was 96.66% at March 2019, above the target of 95%. The coverage for 1 year olds has dipped slightly from the previous quarter, nonetheless it is still close to the target at 92.37%.

We have reached the aspirational target of 95 per cent coverage for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander five year olds. We are getting close for one year olds and the coverage rate for two year olds are projected to have a steady increase.

National coverage rates

Immunisation coverage for one and five year olds has increased since 2009. We have reached the target of 95 per cent for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander five year olds.

As at March 2019, the coverage rates were:

  • 92.37% for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander one year olds
  • 88.62% for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander two year olds
  • 96.66% for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander five year olds

State and territory coverage rates

Four states and territories (Northern Territory, New South Wales, ACT and Tasmania) have coverage rates above the national rate.

    The coverage rates for two year olds are low compared to other age groups due to changes to the immunisation schedule in 2016. Nonetheless, the national coverage rate has started to increase for two year olds since last year.
