Police certificate and worker screening requirements in aged care

Police certificates and NDIS Worker Screening clearances protect the health, safety and wellbeing of senior Australians receiving aged care services. They are part of an approved provider’s responsibility to make sure all staff and volunteers are eligible to provide care.

Changes made to recognise NDIS Worker Screening clearances

On 1 December 2020, approved residential aged care and Multi-Purpose Service providers who support residents who are National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants were automatically registered as NDIS providers.

All registered NDIS providers must ensure all workers in a risk assessed role, which includes working with NDIS participants, have an NDIS Worker Screening clearance, unless a transitional arrangement is in place.

For aged care, this means an NDIS Worker Screening clearance may be required in addition to a police certificate required under aged care legislation.

Changes have been made to aged care legislation to recognise NDIS Worker Screening clearances so that both clearances are not required.

This fact sheet outlines how the changes affect aged care providers that are also NDIS registered providers.
