Streamlined Consumer Assessment for Aged Care

We are designing a new framework for aged care assessments. Improved processes will mean older people get the care they need sooner. From 2020, new national assessment workforce will assess people for all types of government-funded aged care services.

What will change?

We are designing a new framework for aged care assessments. The new framework will provide a better experience for older Australians by ensuring access to the right services to meet their care needs sooner.

From 2020, a new national assessment workforce will assess people for all government-funded aged care services.

What are assessments?

Before someone can access government-funded aged care services, they need to be assessed. An assessment works out:

  • a person’s care needs
  • the types of care and services a person may be eligible for

Who was consulted?

To develop the framework, we consulted groups across the aged care sector such as:

  • aged care service providers
  • consumers, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • existing assessment organisations (Regional Assessment Services and Aged Care Assessment Teams)
  • other interested stakeholders

Find out about the public consultation that was open between 10 December 2018 and
11 February 2019.

Why is this important?

Every year, more than 400,000 assessments are done for home support services, home care packages and residential care.

The current process can be complex and inefficient — some people are assessed more than once to work out their aged care needs.

Who will benefit?

A streamlined assessment process means older people will be able to access the right care sooner.

This is especially important for people who live in rural and remote areas and those who have complex care needs.
