Taking Preventative Action

Taking Preventative ActionTaking Preventative Action outlines the Government’s response to Australia: the Healthiest Country by 2020, the final report of the National Preventative Health Taskforce, which put forward a range of strategies to address the growing economic and health burden associated with obesity, tobacco and alcohol.

In developing its response, the Government undertook over 100 consultations with health practitioners and the general public on this report and that of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission.

The Australian Government supports or is already taking action in 28 of the 35 recommended key action areas. This is the first step in responding to the Taskforce’s final report, and further action will be taken into the future, monitoring trends, assessing outcomes, evaluating the evidence and building on recent investments.

The Taskforce says that prevention is everyone’s business – and the Government has called on all levels of government, peak organisations, health professionals and practitioners, communities, families and individuals to play their role in preventing chronic disease and making Australia the healthiest country by 2020.
