A cost-benefit analysis of the legislative options to mandate the supply of Opal fuel and control the sale of premium unleaded petrol in designated regions of Australia was undertaken by the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies.

Evaluation of the impact of Opal fuel: executive summary (2008)

An evaluation conducted by James Cook University on the impact of Opal fuel since its introduction in 2005. The study assessed the impact Opal fuel has on preventing petrol sniffing in communities.

Data collection for the Petrol Sniffing Prevention Program: report summary (2007)

A report containing baseline data on petrol sniffing from 74 remote Aboriginal communities collected by James Cook University as a result of recommendations from a COMGAS evaluation undertaken in 2004.

Report on the sampling & analysis of Opal unleaded petrol (2007)

An independent analysis of the fuel specifications of unleaded Opal fuel conducted by specialised fuel analysis company, Intertek Testing Services (Australia). All samples tested complied with the national standards in the Fuel Standard (Petrol) Determination 2001.

Peer review of unleaded Opal fuel analysis (2007)

SWB Consulting reviewed technical reports produced for BP Australia Pty Ltd about the effects of Opal fuel on vehicle performance, durability, drivability, efficiency and emissions. The results found Opal fuel complies in all respects with the National Fuel Quality Standards.

An evaluation of the Comgas Scheme (2004)

Prior to the launch of Opal fuel in 2005, the Comgas Scheme provided alternative low aromatic petrol to combat petrol sniffing. An evaluation of the scheme highlights a number of key findings including it as a safe, effective and popular intervention. Back to top
