Guidelines for Local Management of the NIMC

There is a process for considering quality adjustments to the NIMC that will improve medication safety. The Jurisdictional Guidelines for Local Management of the National Inpatient Medication Chart (PDF 148 KB) provide information on:

  1. local management of change requests

  2. elevating change requests to the national level

  3. reporting decisions to stakeholders

  4. summary rationale for the NIMC (Attachment 1)

  5. details on which sections of the NIMC can be customised for local use (Attachment 2).

Requests for changes to the NIMC are required to be evidence-based and are considered at the local (State or Territory) level in the first instance. Requests that are not resolved at the local level are considered by the Health Service Medication Expert Advisory Group and a register maintained of requests and outcomes.

Issues register

The NIMC issues register lists issues which have been considered by the Health Service Medication Advisory Group after being referred by State or Territory representatives.

Suggested NIMC changes are sent to local NIMC contacts (Word 40 KB) . If issues cannot be managed locally, they are brought to the Health Service Medication Expert Advisory Group for consideration.
