Report on the Audit of Health Workforce in Rural and Regional Australia

5. Health workforce roles

Page last updated: April 2008

The availability and accessibility of health professionals in various communities is primarily considered in terms of the numbers of health professionals in each discipline within a given geographical region. The mix of health professionals making up the total health workforce can have a substantial impact on the extent to which the available health professionals are able to meet demands for health services. An understanding of the roles and responsibilities particular to each health profession is necessary when determining the impact that the availability of health professionals has on the access to health services in a given population or community.
