Page last updated: 11 March 2011

Under section 3GC of the Health Insurance Act 1973, the Medical Training Review Panel (MTRP) is required to examine the demand for and supply of medical training opportunities and to monitor the effect of the Medicare provider number arrangements. These arrangements generally require medical practitioners to complete a recognised postgraduate training program, as either a general practitioner or other specialist, before they are eligible to provide services that attract Medicarebenefits.

Role of the Medical Training Review Panel

The MTRP was established to monitor the demand for and supply of medical training opportunities and to monitor the implementation of particular measures in the Health Insurance Amendment Act(No 2) 1996.
