Older Australians are, and have always been, a treasured asset to our nation. They have helped shape modern Australia and they continue to make a significant contribution to society with a lifetime of skills, knowledge and experience to share.
To recognise the remarkable contributions that older Australians make to their families and communities I have inaugurated a national day of celebration for older Australians on 1 October 2005, to coincide with the International Day for Older Persons.
The theme for this inaugural National Day for Older Australians is ‘Celebrating Seniors’.
By observing a special day, I believe that we can enhance people’s attitudes towards older Australians and encourage participation by all seniors in our community.
As part of the celebrations, this book of stories and photographs has been developed to honour the lives and achievements of a selection of Australians who were nominees for the National Australia Day Council Senior Australian of the Year Award (2005).
From every State and Territory, these older Australians relate their motivational stories involving active participation of seniors in every aspect of community life, from educating children and adults, making puddings for charity, preserving our heritage, building schools, encouraging participation in sport, helping those in need both in Australia and overseas and contributing to science.
The contributors to this book remind us all that no matter how old we are, we have something valuable to offer our community. Recognising and celebrating the contribution of these inspirational older people will ensure that Australia is a society for all ages. In sharing their experiences they encourage and motivate us all.
