Trachoma program coverage

  • NSW undertook a mapping exercise in the Far Western NSW and Western NSW regions and follow-up screening in the Western NSW region.
  • Ten communities were identified by expert advice and local knowledge as being potentially at risk of trachoma and therefore screened (Table 5.1).

Screening coverage

  • Population screening coverage for trachoma in the 5-9 year-old age group was 63% (Table 5.1)

Clean face prevalence

  • Clean face prevalence was assessed in all communities that were screened.
  • The overall prevalence of clean faces among 5-9-year-old children in the screened communities was 100% (Table 5.1).

Trachoma prevalence

  • The prevalence of trachoma in children aged 5-9 years screened was 0% (Table 5.1)

Treatment delivery and coverage

  • No treatment was required in 2014.

Trichiasis

  • Trichiasis screening was not required to be undertaken in 2014.

Health promotion

  • Health promotion activities were not provided in 2014 as part of the NSW trachoma mapping exercise.

Figure 5.1 Trachoma prevalence in children aged 5-9 years, number of communities that were screened, treated or both for trachoma and number of potentially at-risk communities, New South Wales, 2014

Figure 5.1 is a map of NSW, divided into the 8 regions, to illustrate the trachoma prevalence in children aged 5 to 9 years. The map indicates no trachoma in the Western and Far Western NSW regions, and there was no data collected/no screening/not risk in any other NSW region. The map also lists the number of communities per region that were screened and or treated; the remaining number of at-risk communities that did not require screening or treatment; and the percentage of trachoma prevalence in that region. Western NSW region screened 5 communities, and recorded 0% trachoma prevalence and Far Western NSW screened 5 communities, and recorded 0% trachoma prevalence.
