Indigenous residents of the Acacia Ridge area of South Brisbane are enjoying better access to community health services with the opening of a revamped health clinic at the Murri School.

The clinic will serve the school’s student body, but will also be available to the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Opening the clinic today, the Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon, said anyone familiar with the cramped and ill-equipped clinic that had previously existed on the site would be astounded at the transformation.

“We now have a fully-functioning healthcare facility with three consultation rooms, a treatment room, an admission office and a kitchen,” he said.

The $517,000-project was overseen by the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health and the clinic is being run by one of the Institute’s members, The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service Brisbane.

Mr Snowdon praised the Institute for establishing a Model of Care for Chronic Disease to support quality services to Indigenous clients through the full spectrum of health care.

“I am delighted that the Australian Government is able to fund what we are calling a ‘surge effort’ to fully imbed the Model of Care across the Institute’s membership,” he said.

As a result, the total number of health checks made by Institute members had almost doubled in the last financial year, from 2487 to 4595.

“The Institute and its members’ services are playing a key role in the Government’s efforts to close the gap in Indigenous health disadvantage,” Mr Snowdon said.
