Northern residents will have easier access to mental health services thanks to Adelaide’s third Community Mental Health Centre officially opening its doors in Salisbury.

Federal Minister for Mental Health Mark Butler said the Federal and South Australian Labor governments are moving to improve the responsiveness of the health system to people with mental illness.

“The evidence is clear — mental health needs to be addressed with the same urgency as physical health,” Mr Butler said.

“This new centre in Salisbury will mean people are getting support targeted at their needs, instead of being forced to visit a hospital emergency department.”

“All Governments need to work together to improve the mental health of the whole population and to deliver advanced, more responsive services for those who need them.”

South Australian Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Jack Snelling said the new Park Terrace centre offered a range of treatment and care.

“This new Centre will give people in the north access to mental health support in their local area, keeping them closer to home,” Mr Snelling said.

“It will provide a variety of services including psychiatric and rehabilitation programs for people who need support but do not need to be admitted to hospital.

Mr Snelling said the opening of the Northern Community Mental Health Centre represents the State Government’s pledge to bring more health services to local communities.

“This centre is one of six to be built across Adelaide as part of a $34 million State Government initiative.”

The Federal funding provided is part of the Gillard Government’s $2.2 billion national mental health reform plan.

The Northern Community Mental Health Centre will provide:
Mental health information services;
  • Assessment services;
  • Crisis response services;
  • Outreach services;
  • Rehabilitation support;
  • Therapy services;
  • Psychiatric services; and
  • Psychology services.
