Minister for Ageing Mark Butler today announced 72 new aged care nursing scholarships as part of the Australian Government’s commitment to boost the aged care workforce.

The scholarships provide financial support for people to study nursing at university, or to undertake continuing professional development. They also support candidates who wish to undertake nurse re-entry studies.

Mr Butler said the Government was investing $52.6 million for 2860 scholarships to be provided over four years.

“The scholarships are part of the Government’s efforts to address workforce pressures with the aged care workforce needing to almost triple in size by 2050 to support Australia’s ageing population,” Mr Butler said.

“The scholarships complement our recent announcement to increase pay and improve conditions for Australia’s 350,000 aged care workers.”

“Ultimately, a better paid, better skilled and better trained workforce will underpin a more responsive system that provides older Australians with quality care, when and where they need it.”

“Aged care is a very rewarding part of the health system to work in and scholarships like these provide real and practical support while extending skills, improving clinical care and furthering careers in aged care.”

The scholarships are for postgraduate, undergraduate and nurse practitioner studies, including continuing professional development, and for nurse re-entry courses.

The scholarships are open now and close on 26 April 2013 and more information can be obtained from the Australian College of Nursing on 1800 116 696 or at www.acn.edu.au.
