Minister for Ageing Congratulates Senior Australian of the Year 2013
The Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, has congratulated internationally recognised palliative care specialist Professor Ian Maddocks AM who received this year’s Senior Australian of the Year award.

The Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, has congratulated internationally recognised palliative care specialist Professor Ian Maddocks AM who received this year’s Senior Australian of the Year award.
Mr Butler said Emeritus Professor Maddocks, Professor of Palliative Care at Flinders University in Adelaide, had made a significant contribution to the development of palliative care practices throughout Australia.
“Professor Maddocks has been a leader within the palliative care sector as the first Chair of Palliative Care at Flinders University, first President of the Australian Association for Hospice and Palliative Care and first President of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Palliative Medicine to name just a few achievements.”
“Professor Maddocks is also recognised for his continuing valuable work as a member of the Steering Committee which oversees the development and implementation of Palliative Care Australia’s National Standards Assessment Program."
“The program is a national framework for continuous improvement in the quality of palliative care for all Australians and is funded by the Australian Government under the National Palliative Care Program.
“The Senior Australian of the Year award is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of older Australians who have so much to offer not only to friends and family but to the wider community,” Mr Butler said.
The Minister also congratulated Ms Ita Buttrose who has been named the 2013 Australian of the Year. Ms Buttrose has been the National President of Alzheimer’s Australia since 2011 and is also a keen advocate for raising awareness of breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, and prostate cancer.
“The important advocacy work Ita has done with Alzheimer’s Australia to raise awareness of dementia has made a profound contribution to destigmatising the condition in the community.”
“I offer my sincere congratulations to Ita and particularly commend the work she’s done for older Australians.
The awards were announced by the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, at Parliament House, Canberra, this evening.
