Twenty-six Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Men’s Sheds and groups, located in every mainland state and the Northern Territory, have won grants for their local community activities in a special $125,000 round funded by the Australian Government.
“These grants will help the great work of the sheds, particularly in remote communities where few jobs or activities may be available for some men,” Minister for Indigenous Health Warren Snowdon said today.
“Men’s Sheds and men’s groups provide a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males can connect with their elders and work on traditional and cultural activities.
“They are a place where men can work at their own pace, in their own time and, importantly, in the company of other males. This helps build friendship and social support networks for local men, including those who are older and disadvantaged.
“It is well known that social support can go a long way to improving general health and wellbeing for all men, and particularly for Indigenous men.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men generally have poorer health outcomes compared to the wider male population, and their life-expectancy is around 11.5 years less than other Australian men.
“So I am pleased to announce this funding support which will make a difference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Men’s Sheds and groups,” he said.
The 26 grants announced by Mr Snowdon today will help the recipient groups with new buildings and maintenance, tools and local shed activities.
Under its National Male Health Policy, the Government has funded Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) to run and support the Shed Development Program..
Activities supported in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Round include:
- Funding to a shed to purchase materials for an art program that will include traditional wood carving and leather projects and a new emu egg carving project. The remote community uses the shed as an entry point for Aboriginal men who live remotely and struggle with high levels of social, emotional, economic and physical disadvantage. It provides a safe place for them to yarn and work on cultural activities.
- Funding to create a separate workshop area in a disused powerhouse building, to reduce noise and create a space for other activities like medical checks. The disused powerhouse building is a gathering place for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men to learn new skills in a safe and supportive environment.
- Funding to promote a Connecting to Country project in an isolated Indigenous community. The men’s group there provides 10-day, out-of-town youth camps that focus on the connection to their elders and culture with bush walks, bush tucker and yarning.
The following table lists the successful applications for the Indigenous Men’s Sheds Funding Round.
