Aboriginal people on the New South Wales South Coast have welcomed the return of Katungul Aboriginal Corporation to community control.

Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon and Member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly, joined with members of the South Coast community for the handover today.

Mr Snowdon said Katungul operates a Medical Centre at Narooma and Bega providing health care to Aboriginal people across the Far South Coast of New South Wales.

“Handing back control of Katungul Aboriginal Corporation to the community brings us a step closer to achieving the goals of the Australian Government and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which is in closing the gap in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the wider Australian population.”

“Katungul has made it clear to Government that it will work hard to address the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the region, this handover of control means the community can also help shape Katungul,” Mr Snowdon said.

The Federal Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) recently signed a funding agreement with Katungul for the 2012-13 financial year to ensure continued health service delivery.

Member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly said Katungul has worked incredibly hard alongside DoHA, the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations and the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council to ensure today’s handover would happen.

“It has been a difficult time for Katungul over the last 12 months, and the Federal Government is more committed than ever to ensuring that Indigenous families in Eden-Monaro get access to the full spectrum of available services.

“The community and I have worked very hard to get things back on track for Katungul and I would like to thank the administrator, the Eldridge Group for its efforts.

“I look forward to seeing Katungul delivering health services right across the region long into the future, with the community playing a very important part in those operations,”
Dr Kelly said.
