The Minister with responsibility for Male Health, Warren Snowdon, has announced 31 Men’s Sheds across Australia will be helped to fit out their buildings, purchase tools or supplies and to run programs to spread health messages.

Mr Snowdon said the Australian Government is committed to improving the health of Australian males by finding ways to make the health system more responsive to the specific and unique needs of males.

“Sheds are playing a key role in strengthening communities and in promoting the physical and mental health of males, we have committed $3 million of our $16.7 million National Male Health Policy to the Australian Men’s Shed’s Association to help support sheds, and $250,000 each year for three years in direct financial assistance for Men’s Sheds around Australia.

“Each Men’s Shed has its own character – some are traditional buildings, some are vans, some are virtual sheds - but common factors include friendliness, social inclusiveness, a safe environment and a range of activities to suit every community.

“Some sheds were successful in this funding round in more than one category so that 13 sheds received funding for tools and equipment; 11 for building maintenance and development; and 14 for shed activities and programs,” he said.

Organisations in the community involved with Men’s Sheds can apply for funding to assist with establishing new sheds, to purchase tools and work equipment, to improve disability access, for insurance or connection to utilities such as power, water, telephone and the internet, and a range of shed activities and programs.

Sheds can apply to purchase fundraising equipment such as barbeques, cold storage containers, printing of flyers and related items such as shed logo shirts and/or hats to wear at fundraising activities to increase community and sponsor awareness of the shed.

Mr Snowdon joined the Member for Kingston, Amanda Rishworth, for a visit to the Aldinga Men’s Shed, to see some of the activities and support available to males in the local area.

“Aldinga Community Centre previously received $5,385 to assist with a new storage shed and shelving to house woodcraft and other projects,” Ms Rishworth said.

“But the funding has also helped create safe working areas and allowed more activities to be run to meet the growing local demand.”

Aldinga’s Shed and 19 others were successful in the first round. In the second round, 25 sheds received funding. Another 31 sheds will now receive funding under Round 3.

There are now around 1,000 sheds of various sizes offering Australian men a place to socialise, network as well as sharing skills and information.

The Shed Online, is also proving to be a popular site, fostering that sense of community and further extending men’s health, wellbeing and social connections and networks across the internet.

Further details about the successful recipients are attached. Information about grants can be found on AMSA’s website at www.mensshed.org.

The Round 4 is expected to open in late March 2012 and any interested sheds should monitor the AMSA website for updates: www.mensshed.org.

Queries on the application process for the program can be directed to Liz MacDonald at AMSA on 0408 466 401 or via email at liz@mensshed.net
