Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek today confirmed that Dr Tony Sherbon had been appointed as the permanent CEO of the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority.

“Dr Sherbon has done an excellent job in establishing the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority and working with all jurisdictions to determine Australia’s first National Efficient Price for hospital services,” said Ms Plibersek.

“I congratulate him on his permanent appointment.”

Dr Sherbon has been acting CEO since December 2011 when IHPA was established under the National Health Reform Act 2011.

He has extensive experience in health and public administration including leadership of the South Australian Health Department from 2006 to 2011. He has also held senior leadership roles in the NSW and ACT health systems.

The Chair of the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority (IHPA), Shane Solomon said Dr Sherbon has demonstrated exceptional leadership as the acting CEO of IHPA including the delivery of the inaugural National Efficient Price for Australian public hospital services.

“Dr Sherbon brings to the role a commitment and enthusiasm for IHPA’s work to provide a more transparent and efficient delivery of public hospital services in Australia,” Mr Solomon said.

Dr Sherbon has been appointed for a period of five years commencing 13 December 2012.
