Federal Minister for Health

2 December 2012

The Newman Government stands condemned for their crippling cuts to health services in regional Queensland.

Federal Coalition MPs have joined with their State LNP counterparts to peddle a dishonest campaign to draw attention away from the Newman Government’s callous cuts.

This is nothing but a shameless campaign to hide the LNP’s shameful slash-and-burn health budget.

But the Queensland Government’s own budget papers make damning reading and spell out the real nature of these cruel and nasty cuts to regional Queensland health services.

The Newman Government is carving $1.6 billion from frontline services, including sacking 4,140 QLD health workers and cutting funding for services such as breast screening and preventative health programs.

This is in stark contrast to the Gillard Government’s investments, where federal funding for health in Queensland will increase by 21% over the next four years, going from $3.1 billion in 2012-2013 to $3.7 billion in 2015-16 – an additional $600 million.

Adjustments in growth forecasts are based on a formula agreed to by the Queensland Government, and suggestions to the contrary are deceitful rubbish.

It is about time Premier Newman and his Health Minister Mr Springborg came clean about what these cuts are going to mean for the people of regional Queensland.

The Gillard Government will continue making record investments in health because we believe it is right that all Australians can get high quality health services when and where they need them.

The challenge for Premier Newman is to realise he’s got it wrong, and immediately reverse these appalling cuts.
