The brand new children’s short-stay ward at Brisbane’s Prince Charles Hospital was today officially named in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan and Health Minister Tanya Plibersek joined Queensland Governor Penelope Wensley and state Health Minister Lawrence Springborg to name the 20-bed paediatric ward.

The ward was built at a cost of $60 million – of which more than $45 million was provided by the Federal Labor Government under an agreement with the former Queensland Labor Government.

“These new facilities will be great for youngsters and their families on Brisbane’s Northside in Chermside and the wider region,” Mr Swan said.

“In the next two years alone, the emergency department here at the Prince Charles Hospital expects to treat about 20,000 young patients.

“It’s reassuring and comforting for kids and their families that they are able to wait and be seen in an environment that’s designed especially for them.

“While Federal Labor is providing money to build new facilities like we’re seeing at Prince Charles, the Newman Government is slashing health services across the state.

“The Deputy Prime Minister and I were here to tour this wonderful kids’ facility in August, and we’re delighted to be back to give it a sparkling new name — the Diamond Jubilee Ward,” Ms Plibersek said.

“Everyone deserves access to first-class healthcare, no matter who they are or where they come from.

The naming ceremony follows this month’s Diamond Jubilee tour of Australia by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
As well as the 20-bed short-stay unit, the paediatric care facilities include 12 emergency department bays and an eight-room specialist outpatient clinic.

They also include play areas, overnight sleeping facilities for parents or carers, and specially designed furniture and decor.
