Improved Access to Medicare-Funded MRI Services

From today, thousands of patients, particularly children, will benefit from expanded access to Medicare-funded Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services.
An additional 191 newly Medicare-eligible MRI services come on line today, giving patients improved access to ongoing, affordable and convenient diagnostic imaging services.
“The Gillard Government is delivering a $104.4 million Australia-wide expansion of Medicare-eligible MRI services to make it easier for patients to get affordable scans closer to home,” said Ms Plibersek.
“Partial Medicare-eligibility is provided for 161 MRI units in metropolitan locations and full Medicare-eligibility is provided for 30 MRI units in regional locations,” she said.
The package includes increased access to MRI services for children by allowing GPs to order MRIs for all patients under the age of 16 for a small set of clinically appropriate indications.
This is aimed at avoiding exposure of children to unnecessary radiation associated with other types of diagnostic imaging like computed tomography (CT) scans.
Children under the age of 16 will be able to have an MRI performed for a scan of the head for certain symptoms, the spine for unexplained neck or back pain, the knee for internal joint derangement, the hip for certain indications, the elbow, and the wrist.
“These new measures will enable GPs to provide referrals, rather than have their parents take them to a specialist which would take extra time and be an added expense.
“That will help cut down both the time and the money that parents spend on treating their children,” Minister Plibersek said.
The improved access also includes five existing specialist or consultant physician requested cancer staging items and breast screening services for women at risk under the age of 50.

Help with accessing large documents
When accessing large documents (over 500 KB in size), it is recommended that the following procedure be used:
- Click the link with the RIGHT mouse button
- Choose "Save Target As.../Save Link As..." depending on your browser
- Select an appropriate folder on a local drive to place the downloaded file
Attempting to open large documents within the browser window (by left-clicking)
may inhibit your ability to continue browsing while the document is
opening and/or lead to system problems.
Help with accessing PDF documents
To view PDF (Portable Document Format) documents, you will need to have a PDF reader installed on your computer. A number of PDF readers are available through the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) Web Guide website.
