2 August 2012Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek today opened the $516,000 extension of the Bloomhill Therapy Centre on the Sunshine Coast.
“This new extension will mean more people who are suffering from cancer will be able to receive the treatment they need closer to home,” said Ms Plibersek.
Ms Plibersek said the Gillard Government extension included five interview/treatment rooms, a multifunction room for allied health professionals, counselling and support group services.
“Bloomhill is currently providing services to approximately 900 patients. We expect that this extension will allow the facility to see even more.”
Mr Plibersek said the Government recognises that people living outside the major metropolitan centres face difficulty accessing GPs, specialists and treatment for chronic disease.”
“That’s why we directed $475 million in the last Budget to regional Australia through the Health and Hospitals Fund, bringing investment in health projects paid for by the fund to $5 billion.”
During the opening, Ms Plibersek acknowledged the founder of Bloomhill, Margaret Gargan, the staff and volunteers at the centre.
Senator Claire Moore said Bloomhill offered vital services to the local community including support for people who had been diagnosed with cancer and their families.
“I have been a supporter of the work Bloomhill does in the community for many years and am delighted to see this important extension take shape,” said Senator Moore.
