The Federal and State Governments today announced they would call for applications for a new $6 million project to improve services provided to people with mental health issues in Tasmania.

Federal Minister for Mental Health Mark Butler said the project was funded through the National Partnership Agreement on Mental Health and would deliver individualised support to around 280 people over the next four years.

“This project is intended to better support people with severe mental illness to stay well, secure a stable place to live and live a contributing life,” Mr Butler said.

Tasmanian Minister for Health Michelle O’Byrne said advertisements would go out this weekend calling for proposals from community organisations to deliver individualised packages of care.

“These packages of support will be recovery-focussed and client-centred, helping people remain connected with their community, which is a significant factor in protecting mental wellbeing,” said Ms O’Byrne.

“Sadly, people experiencing severe and persistent illness can struggle to maintain this connectedness, and can experience frequent hospital admissions.”

“Each support package will be designed with a focus on recovery and access to the accommodation, education, employment and social supports that are right for the individual client.”

Ms O’Byrne said the initiative would benefit those who needed it most.

“Providing this support within the community will help break the cycle of hospital readmission and homelessness that can develop when the right support is lacking.”

The Request for Proposals closes on 14 January 2013. Documents can be obtained by calling 6230 7784 during normal office hours.
