Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today announced an additional $12.1 million in funding to extend the National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP).

Mr Butler said the funding would be delivered over the next 18 months and prioritise improved access and broader distribution across Australia.

“Caring for someone full-time is a physically and emotionally demanding job and carers need a break from time to time, to relax, catch up with friends, and other day-to-day activities,” Mr Butler said.

Currently, carers are supported in a number of planned respite settings including day respite in community centres, in-home respite, overnight respite cottages and community outings.

“This funding will help community services meet the demand for respite services from carers who dedicate so much of their time to improving the lives of loved ones.”

In addition to this new funding, the Australian Government has invested more than $214 million towards more than 500 respite services nationally as part of the NRCP.

The program targets carers of frail older Australians (over 65 years, or over 50 years for Indigenous Australians), people with dementia and challenging behaviours, people with a terminal illness requiring palliative care and employed carers.
