The Gillard Labor Government today announced that Australian University Sports are the latest national sporting organisation to sign-on to the Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking campaign.
Minister for Mental Health Mark Butler said Australian University Sports joins the twelve national sporting organisations already involved in the initiative, including the Football Federation of Australia, Netball Australia and Swimming Australia.
“These national sporting organisations have been provided funding out of a $25 million government sponsorship program to promote the Be the Influence campaign to address binge drinking,” Mr Butler said.
“As well as encouraging athletes to Be the Influence within their community, we are also reducing the exposure of young people to alcohol imagery and messaging”
“It’s a great way for these sports to access an alternative form of sponsorship to alcohol sponsorship and at the same time promote a healthy message about athletes being a positive influence on young people.”
Australian University Sport is the peak governing body of university sport in Australia and represents more than one million students across the country.
Chief Executive Office Don Knapp from Australian University Sports said his organisation was excited to be a part of this new awareness campaign.
"We have removed all alcohol sponsorship and promotion from our events and this new partnership provides us with the support we need to continue to provide elite sporting competitions free from alcohol messaging,” Mr Knapp said.
Mr Butler will today join Australian University Games athletes and Olympic cycling champions to start the women’s Criterium race to officially launch the new sponsorship arrangement.
“University sport is a vital part of the sporting pathway in Australia and this sponsorship provides the Government with an excellent opportunity to promote positive health messages to young athletes and students right around Australia.” said Minister Butler.
The sponsorship agreement acts strictly as an alternative to alcohol sponsorship at Australian University Sports competitions and does not affect the pourage rights and service of alcohol at stadiums and events.
