Families rocked by the loss of loved ones to suicide can now access bereavement assistance through a federally funded program.
Labor has provided $6.9 million to United Synergies’ StandBy Bereavement Response Service designed to assist those bereaved by suicide.
Minister for Mental Health Mark Butler said the program would provide support in the wake of suicide.
“It’s important that we remember those who have lost their lives but also support the families and friends left behind.”
“When a person takes their own life it is devastating for families and friends of those lost, but it also rocks entire communities,”
“This program is designed to offer support by expanding the 24-hour face-to-face service and providing training for frontline emergency response services in the community,” Mr Butler said.
Funding to the StandBy Suicide Bereavement Response Service will also help establish and maintain new sites in underserviced regions nationally.
The funding is provided under the Taking Action to Tackle Suicide package and existing National Suicide Prevention Program together deliver $292.8 million funding (from 2011-2016) for practical suicide prevention activity.
