A new headspace youth mental health service will open in Cairns to support young people dealing with depression, anxiety, substance abuse and other mental health issues.

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today joined Cairns Senator and Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Carers Jan McLucas to open the new centre.

“We know that one in four young people will experience a mental health issue this year, making it the single biggest issue facing young Australians,” Mr Butler said.

“However, three-quarters of these people aren’t receiving the professional help they need because of a lack of access to youth-specific mental health services.”

Senator McLucas said the new service would support young people in Cairns and surrounding areas.

“The service has proved to be extremely successful across Australia, with 92 per cent of young people reporting improvements in their mental health after using headspace,” Senator McLucas said.

“The centre will give young people the assistance they need to get back on their feet, get through the tough times and reach their full potential.

“And it will be hugely valuable for mums, dads and other carers of people with mental health issues.”

Senator McLucas also said that the Cairns service is complemented by an online e-headspace service at the headspace website.

“The online service will be a great help for many people in our community who can’t travel to Cairns.”

The new centre is part of the Labor Government’s record $2.2 billion mental health package. Additional funding of almost $200 million is being invested to establish 90 headspace sites across the country.

headspace Cairns is located at the corner of Grafton and Spence Street. It will be open Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
