New Headspace for Greater Western Sydney
A new headspace youth mental health service will open in Penrith to support young people dealing with depression, substance abuse and other mental health issues.

18 July 2012 A new headspace youth mental health service will open in Penrith to support young people dealing with depression, substance abuse and other mental health issues.
Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, joined with Federal Member for Lindsay David Bradbury at the site of the new ‘headspace Greater Western Sydney’ to discuss what it will mean for local youth.
“We know that 1 in 4 young people will experience a mental health issue this year, making it the single biggest issue facing young Australians,” Mr Butler said.
“However, three-quarters of these people aren’t receiving the professional help they need because of a lack of access to youth-specific mental health services.”
“The new service will support young people in outer western Sydney, including the Blue Mountains.”
The service has proved to be extremely successful across Australia, with 92 per cent of young people reporting improvements in their mental health after using headspace.
Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury, welcomed the service coming to Penrith.
“headspace will be a place to turn to for young people in our community who are dealing with mental illness, their families and their carers,” Mr Bradbury said.
“It will give these young people the assistance they need to get back on their feet, get through the tough times and reach their full potential.
“headspace has seen great success throughout other regions of Western Sydney, helping to tackle depression, substance abuse and other mental health issues for young people in communities like ours.”
The new centre is part of the Labor Government’s record $2.2 billion mental health package, additional funding of almost $200 million is being invested to establish 90 headspace sites across the country.
