Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Robert McClelland, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing and Minister for Social Inclusion, Mark Butler, and Senator for Tasmania, Carol Brown, today welcomed the opening a $5.3 million social housing development in Glenorchy.

The new development consists of 18 two-bedroom apartments for seniors. These new homes have been fully funded by the Commonwealth through the Social Housing Initiative, and will be owned and managed by OneCare.

“This new development offers older Australians in our local community the peace of mind and security of having a stable place to live,” Senator Carol Brown said.

“The newly completed unit facility consists of 18 two-bedroom apartments, and incorporates six star energy ratings, demonstrating sustainable technologies and sound environmental principles.

“All of the units incorporate universal design principles and all apartments are Class C Adaptable which means they are easily modified for older tenants and people with disability,” said Senator Carol Brown.

Mr Butler said, “I would like to thank OneCare Housing for its involvement and management of the facility”.

“This isn’t just about bricks and mortar; this is about providing a stable place for older people to call home. For many older Australians, finding an affordable and safe place to live in the local area not only gives peace of mind, but it is also an important part of staying connected to friends and family.”

The development is fully funded through the Australian Government’s Social Housing Initiative, which is designed to assist low income Australians who are experiencing homelessness or struggling in the private rental market.

The Australian Government’s $5.6 billion investment under the Social Housing Initiative represents the single largest investment in social housing ever undertaken by an Australian Government.

“We know that Australia is in the midst of a housing shortage and this Government will continue to work tirelessly to provide affordable housing for Australia’s most vulnerable people,” Mr McClelland said.

“Not only do these homes offer stable accommodation but they also help keep older Australians connected to the wider community.

“Under the Social Housing Initiative, around 19,600 homes are being constructed across the nation and will be completed in 2012 – over 17,100 of these have already been completed.

“In Tasmania, we have delivered 480 of 530 new homes we committed to deliver under the Social Housing Initiative, and all repairs and maintenance have now been completed to over 530 homes across the state,” said Mr McClelland.
