Young people living in Parramatta and surrounding areas will benefit from a new headspace service, officially opened today.

headspace Parramatta is the 31st headspace to open in Australia. It will help thousands of young people aged 12 to 25 years in Parramatta and surrounding areas who are facing mental health challenges each year.

headspace is part of the Australian Government’s $2.2 billion record mental health package. This package includes $197.3 million over five years to expand the number of headspace sites to 90 across Australia by 2014-15. Once all 90 sites are fully established, headspace will help up to 72,000 young people each year.

Theheadspace model provides for holistic care in four key areas – mental health, physical health, alcohol and drug use and social and vocational support.

“Mental health is the single biggest health issue facing young Australians. In any given year, 1 in 4 young people will experience a mental health issue,” Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler said.

"Without the right care and support, mental illness can interrupt schooling, affect employment, impact relationships and in some cases, lead to substance abuse,” he said.

Parramatta MP Julie Owens said young people in Parramatta would now be able to visit the new headspace – Monday to Friday [9am to 5pm] – to chat about what’s going on in their life and seek help and advice if they’re feeling anxious, worried or going through a tough time.

“The new headspace will give young people in Parramatta the help they need to get back on their feet, get through tough times and fulfil their potential.

“The impact of this will be immediate. We’ll be able to improve access to mental health care and related drug and alcohol services for local young people, aged between 12 and 25,” she said.

headspace is an innovative model bringing together a range of allied health professionals, doctors, youth workers and vocational workers in one place to support a local community.

headspace Parramatta is located at 2 Wentworth Street, Parramatta, NSW.
