Donating blood in Adelaide has become more convenient with the opening in central Adelaide of the new Regent Blood Donor Centre in the Regent Arcade in Grenfell Street.
South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill and Commonwealth Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King today joined eight-year-old leukaemia patient Christopher Allen to jointly open the new centre.
Ms King said the opening of the new centre would help the Blood Service collect the 1.4 million blood donations needed this year across Australia and enable it to meet the projected growth in demand for blood and blood products.
“Ensuring a secure supply of blood to meet the clinical needs of patients is vital,” she said.
“The location of this new donor centre in the Adelaide CBD will make the centre more accessible to the Adelaide community and ensure that blood donation is easier for donors.”
The Regent Blood Donor Centre is Australia’s largest donor centre, boasting innovative features including a contemporary design, state-of-the-art facilities, extended opening hours, a 36-couch capacity and a prime CBD location. It has been built at a cost of about $4 million.
Australian governments fully fund the Blood Service to collect, process, and distribute blood and blood products for all Australians, at an estimated cost this year of more than $550 million.
“The Australian Government looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the Blood Service to provide a world-class blood supply to all Australians and in doing so achieve the best value for money from the significant public investment in the Blood Service each year,” Ms King said.
