Following the most successful DonateLife Week to date, thousands more Australians around the country have been encouraged to discuss their organ and tissue donation intentions with their loved ones.

The theme of DonateLife Week 2012 was ‘Ask and know your loved ones’ wishes’. “It’s such an important message because family members will ultimately be asked to make the final decision on organ donation. The fact is too many families just don’t know” said Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King.

DonateLife Week culminated in the screening of The Last Race on ABC1 on Sunday night with 169,000 viewers tuning in.

Ms King commended all those involved in its production, saying “The Last Race was such a poignant film and demonstrates the significance of this important topic in a way all Australians can relate to”.

“During DonateLife Week 2012 it was wonderful to see so many MPs and Senators getting involved in events at local hospitals, community centres, shopping centres and universities and schools to spread this important message” said Ms King.

“The success of DonateLife Week 2012 provides a good platform on which to continue growth this year and ensure as many Australians as possible receive this most important gift – the gift of life”.

The Last Race can still be viewed online via iView for the next 10 days at http://www.abc.net.au/iview.
